Carol A. Topolewski, M.D., F.A.A.F.M.

Family Medicine Physician and Fellow of American Academy of Family Physicians

Dr. Carol A. Topolewski has cared for patients at Pleasant Lake Medical Center since she first opened the practice in 1977. With over 40 years of experience in Family Medicine, Dr. Topolewski places great importance on giving each patient the personal attention that they deserve. 

A highly-acclaimed private practitioner, Dr. Topolewski graduated from State College in Bridgewater, Massachusetts, in 1967 with a bachelor of arts in biology and education. She then earned a master of science degree in anatomy at Creighton University in 1971. Next, she attended medical school at Creighton University School of Medicine where she graduated in 1974 with a doctor of medicine. In 1974 she was elected by the faculty at Creighton University School of Medicine to Who’s Who among students in American colleges and universities. From 1974-1977 she was a resident with Family and Community Medicine at the University of Connecticut Health Center and St. Francis Hospital.

In addition to her role as a private practitioner at Pleasant Lake Medical Center, Dr. Topolewski has also served as a medical director at three different nursing homes. From 1982-2000 she was the medical director at Brewster Manor Nursing Home. For 16 years from 2000-2016 she was the medical director at EPOCH Nursing Home and starting in 2016 Dr. Topolewski became the medical director at Wingate of Brewster Nursing Home.

Dr. Topolewski has been honored with the Physician’s Recognition Award three separate times during her career: 1984, 1990, and 1996. In 2003 she received the Hospital Staff Service Award from the Cape Cod Hospital Customer Service Committee.

Diane S. Campbell, M.D.

Family Medicine Physician

With over 30 years of experience in primary care, Dr. Diane S. Campbell truly enjoys helping people to feel and function better. Dr. Campbell is a compassionate, thorough, and dedicated family medicine physician who treats pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients in an outpatient setting. She has more than 20 years of experience in hospital and long term care settings and is a proven provider of high quality and cost-effective care, delivered in a caring and attentive manner.

Dr. Campbell’s warm and friendly approach to patient care makes her easy to trust. She is also very well respected by her peers, so much so that she was chosen by her colleagues to chair the Family Medicine Department at a 200+bed hospital in Maine. In July of 2008, she was elected to serve as President and Chief of the Medical Staff at MaineGeneral Medical Center.

She completed her undergraduate work at Dartmouth College where she graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1981. Dr. Campbell attended medical school at Oral Roberts University School of Medicine where she graduated third in her class, with high honors. She was the top student in both psychiatry and family practice and was in the 95th percentile on the national boards. From June 1985 to June 1988 she fulfilled her residency in Family Practice at Kennebec Valley Medical Center, Augusta, Maine, and Mid-Maine Medical Center, Waterville, Maine.

Outside of practicing medicine, Dr. Campbell enjoys working in her yard, riding her bike, and watching sunsets at Cape Cod Bay.

James W. Shepherd III, M.D.

Family Medicine Physician

Dr. James W. Shepherd has nearly 20 years of experience providing exceptional care as a Family Physician at Pleasant Lake Medical Center.vHe joined the practice in December of 2002 after spending just over a year at a previous office as a family physician. His patients appreciate his ability to explain medical issues in a language that is easy to understand.

Dr. Shepherd completed his undergraduate work at Brandeis University where he graduated magna cum laude in 1985 with a bachelor of arts in chemistry. He attended medical school from 1994-1998 at the University of Iowa College of Medicine. Following graduation, he worked as a resident in family medicine at the University of Massachusetts, Worcester from July 1998 – June 2001.

A board-certified physician in family medicine, Dr. Shepherd was an instructor with the Department of Family and Community Medicine for the University of Massachusetts Medical School and Family Medicine Residency Program from 2001-2002. He has served as a preceptor for Boston University Medical School students from 2003 to the present. From 2006-2008, Dr. Shepherd was the chairman of the Department of Family Medicine at Cape Cod Hospital.

Elisabeth Fuller Haskell, MS, RN.C, AGPCNP-BC

Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner

Elisabeth Fuller Haskell has been a dedicated employee of Pleasant Lake Medical Offices for nearly 30 years as an adult-gerontology primary care nurse practitioner. She studied at the University of Lowell Department of Nursing and earned a bachelor of science degree in 1982. Five years later she completed her graduate work for her masters of science degree.

Her career as a registered nurse began in November of 1982 at University Hospital in Boston where she worked in the medical/cardiology and metabolic unit as a staff nurse until August of 1985. From September of 1986 to November of 1988, she worked as an emergency room staff nurse at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.

For nearly four years, from September of 1987 to February of 1991, Fuller Haskell worked at the Barnstable County Department of Health and Environment, as the human services program manager where she was responsible for the management of human service programs. These programs included the AIDS Client Advocacy/Educational Services Programs, Multiple Risk Factor Reduction Program, School and Community Health Education, and Communicable Disease/Immunization Programs. Starting in March of 2006 to the present, she has worked as the public health emergency planner for the Barnstable County Department of Health and Environment. In this role, she assists health agents in developing, maintaining, and updating public health emergency preparedness plans.

In addition to her role as a registered nurse, Fuller Haskell was an instructor of a Health and Aging Course for the Gerontological Certificate Program at Cape Cod Community College.
